Iowa’s Disaster Proclamation Activates Insurance Bulletin Requesting Policy Cancellation/Nonrenewal Leniency

On April 13, 2022, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for Cerro Gordo, Hancock, Humboldt, Mitchell, Pocahontas, Winneshiek, and Worth counties following severe weather, which included damaging winds, straight-line winds, heavy rains, thunderstorms, flash flooding, and tornadoes. The state’s emergency proclamation activates Insurance Bulletin 19-04, initially issued on June 17, 2019. The Bulletin calls on insurers to extend relief to consumers impacted by severe weather or a natural disaster and outlines the request for a policy cancellation grace period due to nonpayment or late payment.

On April 15, 2022, Governor Reynolds issued a supplementary disaster proclamation expanding the state of emergency to include Howard County. It also declares that the state of emergency shall remain in effect until May 15, 2022, unless terminated sooner or further extended by Governor Reynolds.
